What stays private

The generated value is not uploaded, logged, put in the page address, or saved by this tool. The ScreenText theme control may save only your display preference.

Copying places the result under your device clipboard’s control. Clear the clipboard separately if your device does not do that automatically.

The defaults are informed by current guidance, but no generator can protect a password that is reused, shared, or exposed on a compromised device.

Use a password manager

Let a trusted password manager store and enter a different random password for every account. Do not reuse the result.

Choose enough length

The 20-character default is longer than the 15-character minimum recommended by current NIST guidance for passwords used as a single authentication factor.

Protect the clipboard

After copying, another app or person with device access may be able to read the clipboard. Paste promptly and clear it when needed.

How the randomness works

Passwords use the browser’s Web Crypto API with rejection sampling, so characters are chosen without modulo bias. Passphrase words are chosen independently, with replacement, from the EFF Long Wordlist. The tool makes no network request containing a generated value.

Does ScreenText see or save the generated password?

No. The generated value stays in this browser. The tool does not upload it, add it to the page address, or save it in browser storage. Your browser and device still control memory and the clipboard.

Should I choose a password or a passphrase?

Use a random password when a password manager will store and enter it. A random multi-word passphrase can be easier to type or remember when a website accepts the length.

Why does the passphrase generator use six words?

Six independent selections from the 7,776-entry EFF Long Wordlist provide about 77 bits of randomness. Selection is with replacement, so the same word may appear more than once.

Is this tool NIST compliant?

NIST guidance is mainly written for systems that verify passwords, so this page does not claim certification. Its 20-character default and short-password warning are informed by current NIST SP 800-63B guidance.

Can I reuse a generated password?

No. Use a different password for every account. A password manager can generate, store, and enter unique passwords for you.

Can ScreenText erase the result from my computer?

The Clear button removes the visible result and releases the tool’s reference to it. Web pages cannot promise to erase browser memory or another app’s clipboard history.
